We remember the gray poverty, the oppressive doublethink, and above all, the bloody tyranny of total state control backed by an aggressive conqueror.

Because we understand history without the rosy tint of university lounge Marxism, we view national defense through a brutally clear lens: hard power comes first. National survival comes first. The warm, fuzzy feeling of the “Current Thing” comes distant last.

There is a persistent, lazy narrative in Western media that frontline NATO nations—Finns, Poles, and Balts—are lying awake at night panicking over whether Washington will uphold its Article 5 commitments. Let us be plain: we are not paralyzed by anxiety over American resolve. The United States remains a formidable military superpower with a deep-seated institutional understanding of strategic deterrence.

What actually keeps northern and eastern NATO planners up at night is not the American backbone; it is the chronic underachievement, bureaucratic paralysis, and spinelessness of Western Europe.

We are looking directly at Berlin and London to pull their weight. For decades, the great industrial giant of Europe, Germany, turned its military into a welfare project and hiding place for pacifist posturing, burying its head in the sand while funding Moscow’s war chest through energy dependency. Even today, despite grand speeches about a Zeitenwende, Berlin drags its feet, tied in administrative knots and political hesitation, struggling to grow the steel backbone required to lead the continent. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom—once the undisputed heavyweight of European security—has allowed its ground forces to shrink to historical lows, leaving its military capabilities stretched paper-thin while its political class gets bogged down in domestic culture wars.

When you live on the edge of the bear’s den, you do not have time for Western Europe’s endless navel-gazing. You build real capability.

This stark divide in worldview was put on full display once again when the political left and their echo chambers in the media raised a collective storm over Finland’s defense hardware procurement—specifically, our long-term defense cooperation and procurement of the David’s Sling air defense system from Israel.

Let us strip away the high-minded rhetoric and examine what we are actually talking about here.

We are talking about procuring a high-altitude missile defense system designed to intercept short-range ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and heavy large-caliber rockets. We are talking about an operational shield capable of locking down our airspace against the exact kind of terror-bombing tactics that Russia inflicts on Ukrainian cities every single night. This is a system that directly safeguards the critical infrastructure of our nation and protects the lives of over a million Finns living in our major urban centers and strategic hubs.

Yet, if you listen to the academic elite, the green-left parliamentarians, and the professional outrage industry, Finland should somehow compromise its own existential air defense to send a symbolic moral message. They demand that we reject state-of-the-art, combat-proven technology—the very technology that keeps our soldiers alive and our skies intact—because it does not align with their curated foreign policy virtue signaling.

This is the classic pathology of Western progressivism: the dangerous belief that moral posturing is superior to physical deterrence.

When a state shares a 1,340-kilometer border with an aggressive, revanchist power, its defense ministry cannot operate as an ethics committee for global conflicts. A commander’s duty is not to win applause at a United Nations cocktail party; it is to ensure that when the artillery starts barking and the missiles start flying, our defense forces have the absolute best equipment available to destroy the incoming threats.

Systems like David’s Sling, the Spike anti-tank missile family, and the Gabriel 5 anti-ship missiles were not selected because of political affinities. They were selected through cold, unapologetic, performance-driven evaluation. They work. They are available. They are integrated into NATO-standard architectures. And they have been tested in conditions where failure means dead citizens.

As for the Islamist terrorists of Hamas and their Western sympathizers who parade through European capitals demanding the isolation of the only democracy in the Middle East: the ancient law of the world remains unbroken. Qui gladio ferit, gladio perit—he who lives by the sword dies by the sword.

Hamas launched a barbaric campaign of murder, rape, and hostage-taking, hiding behind their own civilian population while firing thousands of unguided rockets into civilian homes. To demand that Finland alter its national security strategy to cater to the sensibilities of terror-apologists and academic activists is not just foolish; it is treasonous to the first duty of the Finnish constitutional state. And this is where the political argument becomes particularly absurd. Finland is not buying ideology. We are buying interceptors. The fact that Hamas terrorists and their Western apologists hate Israel is strategically irrelevant. If an Israeli weapons system is among the best available solutions to a Finnish military problem, then Finland should buy it.

Finland’s defense policy has survived for over a century precisely because we never swallowed the naive European delusion that history had ended and that soft power would replace steel and gunpowder. We built a total defense model, trained hundreds of thousands of reservists, and maintained an artillery park larger than Western Europe combined while others dismantled theirs for a “peace dividend.”

It is good, proper, and reassuring that when push comes to shove, Finnish defense procurement decisions are still made by officers and strategists who prioritize military readiness over performative moralizing.

Our skies will be guarded by the best hardware money can buy. Our soldiers will be equipped to kill the enemy and survive the fight. The left-leaning intelligentsia can keep writing their papers and waving their placards—the Finnish Defense Forces will keep securing the realm.
